How often should I do eye exams?

For Adults:

  1. Ages 18–39:
    • Every 2 years if you have no vision problems or risk factors.
    • Annually if you wear glasses, contacts, or have health risks (like diabetes or a family history of eye disease).
  2. Ages 40–64:
    • Every 1–2 years, even if your vision seems fine. Age increases the risk of conditions like presbyopia, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
  3. Age 65 and older:
    • Annually, as risks for cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration increase significantly with age.

For Children:

  1. First eye exam: At 6 months of age.
  2. Age 3–5: At least once to screen for vision and eye alignment issues.
  3. Age 6–18: Every 1–2 years, especially if there are no vision concerns or symptoms.

Special Circumstances:

  1. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health conditions:
    • Annually or as recommended by your eye doctor.
  2. If you wear glasses or contact lenses:
    • Annually to ensure your prescription is accurate and your eyes are healthy.
  3. If you notice changes in vision or eye discomfort:
    • Schedule an exam as soon as possible.

These are general guidelines—your optometrist or ophthalmologist may recommend a personalized schedule based on your specific needs.
