How often should I do eye exams?
For Adults:
- Ages 18–39:
- Every 2 years if you have no vision problems or risk factors.
- Annually if you wear glasses, contacts, or have health risks (like diabetes or a family history of eye disease).
- Ages 40–64:
- Every 1–2 years, even if your vision seems fine. Age increases the risk of conditions like presbyopia, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
- Age 65 and older:
- Annually, as risks for cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration increase significantly with age.
For Children:
- First eye exam: At 6 months of age.
- Age 3–5: At least once to screen for vision and eye alignment issues.
- Age 6–18: Every 1–2 years, especially if there are no vision concerns or symptoms.
Special Circumstances:
- If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health conditions:
- Annually or as recommended by your eye doctor.
- If you wear glasses or contact lenses:
- Annually to ensure your prescription is accurate and your eyes are healthy.
- If you notice changes in vision or eye discomfort:
- Schedule an exam as soon as possible.
These are general guidelines—your optometrist or ophthalmologist may recommend a personalized schedule based on your specific needs.
